Glavne značilnosti 4XMotion pogona so:
• Sredinski diferencial z zaporo: Sistem v osnovi deli moč v razmerju 50 : 50 med sprednjo in zadnjo os. Elektronsko nadzorovana večploščna sklopka lahko po potrebi samodejno (ali ročno prek vrtljivega gumba) zaklene sredinski diferencial in prenese do 100 % navora na posamezno os z več oprijema.
• Reduktor (Low Range): Touareg ima vgrajen prenosni diferenčni kovček z reduktorjem (prestavno razmerje 2,66 : 1), ki zmanjša hitrost in močno poveča navor za zahtevno terensko vožnjo ali vleko težkih tovorov.
• Elektronske zapore diferencialov (EDL): Sistem uporablja zavore za samodejno zaviranje koles, ki izgubijo stik s podlago, s čimer preusmeri moč na kolesa z boljšim oprijemom.
